“Our passionate affair lasted non-stop until The Pirate (1948) when Vincente Minnelli found Judy and I gently fornidancing after hours in the “Mack the Black” set. My swashbuckling pirate costume put a fire in Judy like I had never seen before. When we saw Vincente standing there, Judy was devastated. She was already having problems with him after he overheard Judy telling her sister that I was Liza’s real father. Although Liza would never know any different, Vincente was still crushed. Judy, realizing what she had done to him, told me that I would always be her dashing Macoco, but this would be our last escapade for a while. Knowing that the love between Judy and myself would never truly die, I was still hurt. After she left the set, I slowly got dressed, straightened my toupee and put on a brave face for a world without Judy.”
